A Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting is a public meeting where property owners can contest the assessed value of their property.
-
Each city or township holds this meeting annually, usually in the spring.
-
The board reviews property valuations to ensure they are fair and equitable compared to similar properties.
-
Property owners can appear in person or submit a written request to appeal if they believe their property is overvalued.
-
The board can adjust assessments if they determine the value is incorrect.
It’s essentially a way to ensure property taxes are based on fair market value.
